Theatre X was an American theater company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Until its demise in 2004, it was one of the oldest operating experimental theater ensembles in the U.S. Quinn Design was commissioned to design two posters. One for A Christmas Memory, a Truman Capote adaptation, and Instinct. The Christmas Memory poster employed a layered and collage design to allude to ideas of how memories can be scattered and disjointed. Elements used were an old backyard photo, repeated in different shapes, a page from the actual book, broken words, and intertwined type. A “split fountain” was used in the printing, which created the blended color block, directly on press. This poster was published in the book Launching the Imagination as an example of the use of color disharmony.
